Back On The Ice !

Feb. 21, 2021

It’s been a tough 12 months for everyone. Travel restrictions, restaurant and business limitations and no sports to play. For athletes, it not just that they couldn’t play the sport they are so passionate about, but their social network and sense of “team” was impacted. But thanks to the recent easing of restrictions by Alberta Health Services, GPAC players have been getting back on ice with some skill development - in accordance with the criteria set forth by Alberta Health Services.

GPAC Technical Director, Ryan Allen, says the return to the ice has been a long-time coming.   “It was definitely challenging for everyone involved, players, parents, coaches, volunteers. I think now that we’re back on the ice, it’s a huge positive for everyone involved.”   Ryan shared that 92% of GPAC players have returned to 3 weekly ice times, plus the opportunity to work on their conditioning at TAGS Athletic Gym, Skating Coach Tanya Morgan, as well as a chance to check in with Mental Health Coach Matt Bain. “It’s really positive that so many players, and families still want to be involved after a 3 month hiatus” said Allen. GPAC members will have the opportunity to continue to develop on and off the ice until May 21. The first week back was a good start for all involved. “Lots of smiles, lot’s of positive feedback, and everyone is just happy to be back and to get going”.

Like the rest of us, Allen is waiting to hear how the province does with the metrics set forth by AHS. There are stringent COVID restrictions that teams and players must adhere to in order to practice and work out.   All sports await word from AHS to see if any further hockey development will be able to take place in terms of small area games, possible 3-on-3, or anything resembling game action can take place in the coming weeks or months.

Bigger picture, Allen said with the junior leagues (AJHL & WHL) getting underway, teams are recruiting and players are already getting signed for next year. “Teams are actively recruiting, and filling out their rosters for next season. There are potential showcases going on and that’s a positive as well” said Allen.

With COVID statistics looking more positive, and with vaccinations on the horizon, Allen hopes that youth sports may return to normal conditions in the fall. “If the COVID numbers can stay under control, along with the vaccine, we are all optimistic that sports can return to normal, and we can continue to develop character people and good hockey players in the GPAC program."
